Aitor Karanka is away from work in the Nottingham Forest

Aitor Karanka retired from his office as supervisor of Nottingham Forest after being asked to release him from his contract.

The future of 45-year-old Spanish at City Ground is uncertain, as the Forest has a 3-0 lead to tie 3-3 at Norwich on Boxing Day.

In a statement to the club reads: "Aitor Karanka has been asked to leave his contract as manager of the Nottingham Forest Football Club.

"The club agrees to this request and the terms of the withdrawal are agreed upon, the two parties want each of the successes for the future.

"No more comments from any of the parties."

Forest said the first team coach, Simon Ireland, will take over until a new manager is appointed.
